A minimum of 13 passengers killed and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's major government projects.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.

The president announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose term concluded the year before. This project was closely associated with his government's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in national projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had also raised significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party demanded an urgent pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
