The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
