Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks The Continent's True Threat: Technological Decline.

The recent US security policy document presents a flawed assessment of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "woke" agendas represent an existential risk to the continent's identity. However, this perspective is based on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The actual challenge facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Growth Gap Between the US and Europe

The data reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. During this period, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly 50% of the global 50 largest technology firms are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Question

This widening disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech leadership is decidedly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over $10bn, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity raises a vital issue: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely agree it is essentially a contest between two involving the United States and China, with Europe entering at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

Several key factors explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, which limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper European business. A US startup can launch a service under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population, is split among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, there are causes for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to advance substantial change. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support much higher levels of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses significant advantages: high-quality workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
